Renegade Regatta News
The 2009 IRIYA Championship regatta has been postponed until the weekend of January 16, 17, and 18. Please check back Sunday January 11th at 1:00 CDT for the next update.
Late AM Update
The club decided to pack it in this morning and tear boats down. With winds howling out of the north west, drifts that had a bit of crust over potentially slushy ice, and three three straight days of hard sailing, it was a consensus decision.

THREE OF THREE
2009 is starting off as a great year for ice boating as we've sailed every day of the year and hope to continue the streak tomorrow. The wind was fresh and the boats were fast. Greg Simon and John Dennis won all four of their races in the Renegade and DN classes respectively.
Look for more photos to be posted later.

Friday's photos now posted.

PM Update:
4LIYC Club Racing called ON for 1-3
10 AM Start
Grand Slam Canceled
Frankie Hearn
After a slow morning start, DNs and Renegades were able to scrub race on Monona today. The drifts in the pits were rock hard but weren't as bad out on the racing course. While the ice isn't regatta worthy because of the drifts, DNs, Renegades, Optis, and Nites were able to sail with no problems. Frankie Hearn in his Opti and Joye Ebert in her DN were the first to sail the ice this morning. I'll have more photos later.
News From Holland
Our friend, Maarten, of the De Robben ice sailing club in Holland, writes that they are sailing there.
"
Hope you will get lots of ice and less snow this winter.
We have a good start because we have stronger ice than the past ten years....! The lake of the Robben is also frozen but at this moment only three centimeters of ice but tonight will be a very cold night so we expect to start on Saturday. We will add lots of photo's to our website the coming days, website is in the Dutch language but I believe that you will find the routing to the photo's. Many tradition Dutch icesailing yachts on the ice already and more to follow. We will also upload some short movies soon!"

Sailing PM Update 2:
Club Racing ON for
Thursday, January 1, 2009
I just returned from Tonyawatha Landing in Monona where several boats were up and a few in the process of being put up. The wind had shut down by the time I arrived but some Nites and DNs were able to sail earlier in the day.
Last night's snow caused considerable drifting in the pits but the racing area remains sailable. The general consensus among those who sailed is that with the addition of snow, the ice rates a 6.5.
We should know after tomorrow's sailing whether the Grand Slam Regatta will be called on for Saturday and Sunday. Again, please do not drive on the ice.
Sailing Update
We received about 1.5" of powdery snow last night. A few brave souls (it's 6 degrees at 9:30 AM) will sail their Nites and a DN sometime today on the east end of Lake Monona. Look for a full report later today or early this evening regarding conditions.
Montana Report
Via Dale Livesey, Canyon Ferry, MT:
WIND EVENT ON CANYON FERRY, Montana-
Hurricane force winds ripped through the valley Monday night with gusts at
80mph. A couple of boats broke loose and piled up. The lake is quite
pebbly, with some large drifts out from shore. There is a considerable
area of ice that is drift free along the west shore. If the snow holds off,
it looks pretty good for some fun sailing the rest of the week.

Peter Harken On Ice Boat Speeds
From Scuttlebutt News
“Have these boats gone faster? Probably as they can do 5 to 6 times the speed of the wind, but I haven't seen it in all my years because we're not really interested in records, we're course racing and that for me is fast enough, thank you! There have been faster claims, but accurately measured, uh maybe! Hey, our speed is greatest when there is a little water on the much deeper "hard water" to juice up our runners - so would that count as a legitimate "sailing boat" speed?” Read the article here from Scuttlebutt News.
